1. Introduction
Text Navigation (“Text Navigation,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides an SMS-based navigation and routing service that allows you to request directions by text message and to manage your account through our web application (together, the “Service”).
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, how long we keep it, and the choices and controls available to you. It applies to your use of textnavigation.com, app.textnavigation.com, and the SMS navigation service.
Please read this Privacy Policy together with our Terms of Service and Cookie Policy. By creating an account or using the Service, you confirm that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy.
2. Eligibility and scope
The Service is intended for users located in the United States who are at least 18 years of age. At registration, you are asked to confirm that you are 18 or older. We do not operate an age-verification mechanism and rely on this self-certification. The Service is not directed to, and is not intended for, individuals located outside the United States.
3. Information we collect
We collect the minimum information necessary to operate the Service.
3.1 Information you provide. Your email address and mobile phone number, which you provide when you register
3.2 Information generated by your use of the Service. The start location, end location and mode of transport contained in each navigation request you submit, and the directions returned to you.
3.3 Information collected automatically. Limited technical information, such as your IP address, may be processed by our hosting and DNS providers in the course of delivering and securing the Service (see Section 6). Our hosting provider’s server logs may temporarily record IP addresses, phone numbers and request content.
3.4 Information we do not collect. We do not collect your name, payment or financial details, or any other personal information beyond that described above. We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking or profiling technologies of any kind.
4. Phone number verification and SMS
4.1 When you register, we verify your phone number by sending a one-time passcode (OTP) by SMS. By registering and opting in, you consent to receive SMS messages from us at that number.
4.2 Our SMS messages are limited to the directions you request and related service messages, such as verification codes and account or deletion notices. We do not send marketing or promotional text messages. Message frequency depends on your use of the Service. Message and data rates may apply in accordance with your mobile carrier's plan.
4.3 You may stop receiving SMS messages at any time by replying STOP, after which our SMS provider will cease sending messages to your number. You may resume by replying START. Reply HELP, or contact support@textnavigation.com, for assistance.
4.4 When you register or update your account password, we send a verification email to the address you have provided, containing a confirmation link you must click to complete the relevant action. These emails are transactional and service-essential; we do not send marketing or promotional emails.
5. How we use your information
We use your information only to:
- create, verify, secure and administer your account;
- receive your navigation requests and return directions to you by SMS;
- send you service and account communications, including verification codes and pre-deletion or discontinuation notices;
- maintain, troubleshoot and improve the Service; and
- protect the Service against misuse, fraud, abuse and security threats, and comply with applicable law.
6. How we share your information – service providers
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with any third party for that party’s own marketing, advertising, tracking or profiling.
We share information only with the third-party service providers necessary to operate the Service, and only to the limited extent described below. Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy, over which we have no control.
-
Textbelt (SMS delivery): receives your phone number and the content of your SMS messages in order to send and receive texts. https://textbelt.com/privacy
-
Mailjet (email delivery): receives your email address in order to send account creation and password verification emails. https://www.mailjet.com/legal/privacy-policy
-
Mapbox (routing): receives the start and end addresses in your requests in order to generate directions. https://www.mapbox.com/legal/privacy
-
OpenRouteService (routing): receives the start and end addresses in your requests in order to generate directions. https://ask.openrouteservice.org/privacy
-
Render (hosting): hosts the Service and therefore processes all application data, including data held in its automated backups and server logs. https://render.com/privacy
-
Cloudflare (DNS): processes IP-address information in providing DNS and security for our domains. https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy
We may also disclose information where required to do so by law (see Section 8.6). Some of these providers may process limited data outside the United States in accordance with their own policies.
We may add, remove, or change service providers as the Service develops. We will update this Privacy Policy to reflect any material change to the providers we use.
7. Retention by third-party providers
Even though we delete data from our own systems as described in Section 8, the providers identified in Section 6 retain data independently, on their own schedules and outside our control. In particular, Textbelt retains SMS data (including your phone number and message content), Mailjet retains email delivery data (including your email address and email content), Render retains automated database backups and server logs (which may contain phone numbers, IP addresses and request content), and Cloudflare retains IP-address information, in each case for the period and on the terms set out in that provider's own privacy policy.
The applicable retention periods are determined by each provider and may change. We therefore cannot guarantee deletion of data held within these third-party systems before the expiry of the relevant provider's retention period. For current details, please refer to the privacy policy of each provider linked in Section 6.
8. Data retention and deletion
We do not keep your data longer than necessary to provide the Service, and we do not maintain our own separate archive of your data beyond the infrastructure backups described above.
8.1 Navigation request data. Navigation request data is automatically and permanently deleted on a continuous rolling basis once it is more than seven (7) days old. This deletion occurs automatically and without separate notice to you. Once deleted, such data is not retained by, or accessible to, you or us, and cannot be recovered.
8.2 Inactive accounts. If you do not log in or make a navigation request for ten (10) days, your account is marked inactive. We will send an email to the address on your account at least twenty-four (24) hours before deletion. You can prevent deletion by logging in or making a request during that period. If you do not, your account and all associated data are permanently deleted.
8.3 Deletion at your request. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the web application. Deletion takes effect immediately on our systems.
8.4 Deletion by us. We may suspend or delete your account and associated data where necessary to enforce our Terms of Service, including in cases of misuse, spam, abuse or unlawful use. Our rights in this regard are set out in the Terms of Service.
8.5 What “permanent deletion” means. When we delete your data, we remove it from our active systems promptly and permanently, and we are not able to recover or restore it. As explained in Section 7, however, copies may persist for limited periods within third-party systems outside our control, including service providers’ backups, logs, and records, until they expire under each provider’s own retention practices.
8.6 Legal requirements. We may retain or disclose information to the extent we are required to do so by applicable law, regulation, legal process, or an enforceable governmental or court order. In such circumstances, deletion of the affected data may be delayed only to the extent, and for the period, necessary to satisfy that obligation.
8.7 Discontinuation of the Service. The Service is in open-ended beta and may be discontinued. If we discontinue the Service, we will give registered users at least twenty-four (24) hours’ notice by email, after which all user data will be permanently deleted from our systems (subject to the third-party retention periods in Section 7).
9. Cookies
The web application uses only essential cookies, which are required to authenticate you and maintain your session. We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking or other non-essential cookies. Further details are set out in our Cookie Policy.
10. Your privacy choices and controls
We are committed to giving you full control over the data we hold about you. From within the web application, you can:
- view data then held in your account;
- download your data in CSV format; and
- permanently delete your navigation requests and your entire account.
Because navigation request data is automatically deleted once it is more than seven (7) days old (see Section 8.1), only navigation requests from the preceding seven (7) days are available to view or download. Earlier navigation requests have already been permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved by you or by us.
You can also manage SMS messages using STOP, START, and HELP as described in Section 4. To make any privacy-related request or ask a question, contact support@textnavigation.com. To the extent any applicable law grants you additional rights in respect of your personal information, you may contact us to exercise them.
11. Data security
We take reasonable measures designed to protect your information against unauthorised access, loss or misuse. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. The Service is in active development as a beta project, and you use it on that basis.
12. Children’s privacy
The Service is intended only for individuals aged 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and the Service is not directed to children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a person under 18, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has provided us with information, contact support@textnavigation.
13. International users
The Service is intended for use in the United States, and your information is processed and stored in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local law. As noted in Section 6, certain providers may process limited data outside the United States under their own policies.
14. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version with a revised “Last updated” date and, for material changes, will endeavour to notify registered users by email. Your continued use of the Service after an update takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
